One of the things that my wife and I enjoy doing is partnering with the parents of the young people in our church and getting to know their concerns. This has always been waht we were called to do and we enjoy every moment of it. As we build relationships with them and, later on, become friends, the church becomes just like a family that grows bigger by the year.

One thing I can count on my wife to do is connecting with parents and knowing about parenting styles, including that of the do’s and don’ts of pregnancies like Beaute de Maman, for instance. This January JIVE Youth will be celebrating its 5th anniversary. JIVE, which means, Jesus Inspired, Valuing Eternity, is the youth ministry of Sumulong Baptist Church - Makati. It held its first youth service on a Sunday in January almost five years ago. The youth service was actually a follow up activity to the outreach at Fort Bonifacio High School which was under Mr. Bulan during that time. There were some students from the school and other young people from other high schools in Makati who came to that service and a few of them are now the leaders and volunteers in JIVE Youth.

Since then, JIVE has been active in going into campuses to reach out to students trhough their student governments. At present, we have open doors at Gen. Pio Del Pilar Natinal High School and at Pitogo High School. We intend to share Christ through our outreach programs and through our summer youth camps to students in these schools.

First Camp Preparation Meeting for the 2009 SUmmer Camp

This morning our first official meeting for our preparation for next year's summer youth camp was held at McDonald's along Marcos Highway. The meeting was attended by pastors and different youth leaders representing the churches who will be part of the summer camp. Presiding in the meeting as the moderator was Pastor Alvin of SBC and the other attendees were Bro. Ted of SBC, Pastor James of SBC Santolan, Pastor Jun and Bro. Alex of BBC, Bro. Larry of FTBC, Pastor Eric of SBC El Dorado and yours truly.

The dates tentatively set for camp were on April 14-17 and 21-24 and the theme is Counter Strike, taken from the popular PC role playing game.

Update On the Afternoon Breaking Point Program at Pitogo High School

Yesterday, the Breaking Point program at Pitogo High School reaped 14 professions of faith from 45 students who watched it. The students were from the afternoon shift and were asked to come to school early to watch Breaking Point.

The afternoon program was postponed and it will be conducted on September 30, at 1:00 PM. We hope that volunteers from JIVE Youth would be available for that.

Just last week, after some of our youth distributed flyers to let our community know that our youth center has opened, I received a call while I was on the way home from Makati. It was a mother who was inquiring about our youth center. She was particularly asking about the tutorials we offer to students who visit JIVE youth center. She said that she had a child who is a college freshman and she was wondering how much it would cost to have her tutored in English. I told her that we offer free tutorial but at present we only offer tutorials in Mathematics. Going to Rome

Acts 19:21-22 “After all this had happened, Paul decided to go to Jerusalem, passing through Macedonia and Achaia. "After I have been there," he said, "I must visit Rome also."”

Reading this verse makes one ask why the apostle Paul wanted to visit Rome. Was it because Rome was like the Washington DC of their time? Or could it be that because, during the time of Paul, Rome was where the seat of power was, he wanted to deliver an important message to its leaders? Reading a few more chapters ahead, it says,

Paul wanted to deliver the gospel to everyone and received specific orders to deliver it to Rome. And when he did go there he didn’t live in different Rome apartments. He was imprisoned for the gospel. That is a man with a mission.

I remember one night as I was taking our youth to Makati from our mother church after a missions banquet, we passed by a motorcycle accident that just occurred and we saw a dead person covered with newspaper. We asked as we passed by and someone told us that it was a hit and run. And just recently my sister-in-law showed me a picture of a lady wearing a helmet, lying down on the street with lots of blood on the road. She took the picture along C5 on her way to work. It could also have been a hit and run.

The occurrence of motorcycle accidents have risen due to the increase of the number of motorcycle users. With more people trying to cut down on gas expenses by riding motorcycles, more lives are being put at risk. And I am being particular about hit and run accidents. Because the victims of these accidents usually don’t have the capability to pay extra for Lawyers to help them out. And many of the motorcycle users are young people and some don’t even have driver’s licenses.

Outreach Schedule at Pitogo High School

Last week, our efforts to get our youth ministry inside Pitogo High School took fruit as students and their faculty adviser, who are all part of the high school’s Supreme Student Government, visited our youth center and asked for help regarding the seminars that they want some of the students in their school to go through. So we went to the school last Friday afternoon and talked to the SSG adviser and drew up plans and a schedule for the seminars. The topic that will be touched is the root of substance abuse (alcohol, drugs, etc.) and how to effectively prevent it, using a holistic approach. The schedule that was agreed upon was Friday, August 29, 2008, 9-12PM and 1-4PM. The school is targeting to get 80 students for each schedule and the program will be held at their school’s audio visual room.

We are thinking about the equipment we will need to transport to the school. I know that there are companies like Humboldt.com, a Boston Moving Company which is in the business of packing storing moving and unpacking whatever stuff anyone or any company or organization needs. Our game master, Rege, facilitated a game of observation that required teams to observe 3 players from the opponent team. John 6:3 “Then Jesus went up on a mountainside and sat down with his disciples.”

During Jesus’ years of ministry with His disciples, He often would withdraw from the crowd after a busy time of ministry - casting out demons, healing the sick, preaching, etc. He would either do this alone or with His disciples. The passage above is just one of those instances that Jesus recharged with His disciples or His ministry team. He took them in a peaceful place and talked to them. He probably took time to minister to them, listen to them and spent time together enjoying the beautiful creation of God the Father.

In the youth ministry, especially with a team of volunteers who are busy not only with the ministry but with their own responsibilities at home, school or work, plus their personal problems and struggles, it is important to spend moments like what Jesus and the disciples did.

I hope that within the next two months or so I would be able to take our youth leaders for some nature tripping and some time together, ministering to each other.

This afternoon was the official opening of our youth center, JIVE Youth Center. Students are welcome to hang out, do their assignments, play table tennis, darts or game boards, conduct a group study at our youth center. We are open from 1:00-6:00 PM every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. We offer free tutorial for student's assignments, free use of books, and free lessons on guitar and drums (on a scheduled basis). Youth Service is still every Sunday at 3:30 PM. Kuya Ric is currently our youth custodian and representative who handles the youth center operations under the supervision of Pastor Jeff Aspacio.

Pitogo High School for August 2008

Last Friday, as I was on my way down from the church (which doubles as our youth center), there were about 7 or 8 high school students in uniform I ran into. I thought they were students from Gen. Pio del Pilar NHS who just wanted to see out youth center. But I was confirmed wrong when one of our youth leaders caught up with me in my car and told me that there were students from Pitogo HS who wanted to ask some questions. I hurriedly went back and got seats for everyone. They started to share how they got our proposal letter from their principal and that they were actually looking for some help because they wanted to conduct seminars about drug-abuse prevention, pre-marital sex and the like. I started then to present Breaking Point's program and eventually ended up agreeing to meet on Wednesday (tomorrow) to finalize the program. We initially agreed on doing 5 seminars/programs, one for each Saturday morning of August. We hope that this would materialize and that this would widen the Pitogo High School's door for our youth ministry.

The wisest man who ever lived, King Solomon, once wrote in Proverbs 22:7, “The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.” This statement is practically true. Each time an individual or a group of individuals borrows from another party, the lending party has a certain power over that group or individual. The lender usually sets the terms of the agreement, like when the payment must be made and usually the borrower agrees to this, even though sometimes that individual or group may not be a hundred percent agreeable to the lenders term, because of the urgency of the financial need. Even Debt Collection methods are set by the lender and usually, the lender provides options for the borrower to choose and a lot of times handled by a collection agency.

With these said, is it then wrong for someone to borrow? Or is it wrong to lend to someone? The Bible does not have specific commandments against this. In fact there are even verses that talk about helping those in need. But since the effects on relationships of borrowing among close friends are both good and bad, borrowing or lending is discouraged and being generous, by giving material or financial help, is instead encouraged.

Students of these days are faced with vast choices of careers. There are a lot of times that this has been a major topic of my conversations with them. I believe the right career choice is very important for students to really get down to seriously deciding on.

Information technology career have grown by leaps and bounds. And this is not surprising anymore, with the unstoppable progression of technology in the world. Because of this a lot of students are venturing into IT-related courses, hoping that they would end up in good paying jobs and I know a number of people who are very successful because of this chosen career path.

More often than not when someone takes an information technology related course, various certifications are usually required for career advancement even after graduation. This gives these graduates that competitive edge among the others from the batch. At least this is what I have observed from all those people I know who have succeeded.

There is a considerable satisfaction seeing how the youth that I handle grow from mere kids to responsible students to young professionals. One of the major things that they go through in their lives is deciding on the career path that they will pursue. A number of young people from my core group are currently in this circumstance.

It has been two months now since the five-year contract with our current landlord expired. They have allowed us to use up our five months security deposit at a lower rate than what they were charging us for rent. This has then extended our five months of deposit consumption to almost nine months, giving us more time to look for a new place – preferably on the ground floor and has enough space to hold a church service for about 50 people simultaneous with Sunday school classes of about 30 children total. And right now, we have opened ourselves to moving to the area where God has provided an open door - a high school (Gen. Pio del Pilar National High School) that has allowed us to extend our counseling services.

If we do get a place in that area, which is quite far from where our church and youth center is located now we would be surely needing a moving company like the Boston Moving Company. I am pretty sure it is hard to find one like them here because they are the oldest and most experienced movers in Massachusetts. They even have climate controlled and state of the art storage facilities. You can check out their site for more information about them.

We had our youth service at JIVE Youth center last Sunday and we had guest from Missouri. Brent and Amanda Longenecker travel around the US and Brent does exhibitions of his athletic and acrobatic skills and uses it to get people's attention long enough to make them listen to his personal testimony about how he received Christ as his personal Lord and Savior. Below are pictures of the service (does not include the presentation of the gospel to the 37 elementary kids that were invited because their program was simultaneous to the youth program) and a video of Brent's stunts. In my chosen vocation it is very important to keep on learning, reading and researching for new stuff that can be used as illustrations such as stories, Funny Cartoons or even visuals that can be used to get the attention of listeners. During our last pre-enrollment seminar at Gen. Pio del Pilar National High School, I talked to a parent of a student we had in the seminars and she asked about maybe conducting a career orientation seminar for her 4th year high school child and their classmates. We talked about how important it is to get the right college program even before the students begin to take their college entrance exams so they can choose the right program.

I mentioned that many students I’ve encountered who didn’t choose the right program had to shift to a different program on their second or third year in college. But some continue and, later on, get their MBA.

Pepperdine's Graziadio School of Business and Management, which is recognized by many of the leading graduate business school rankings, offers MBA programs for working professionals, full-time students, and executives and can accept part time students. They also accept full-time students and is offered in Malibu, California. Monday Retreat

This Monday, my wife and I are planning to take the volunteers who are ministering in our church for a day of retreat, recreation and planning. We haven’t thought of a place yet but we are thinking about driving somewhere near like somewhere east of Metro Manila.

How nice it would be if we could have enough time to take a long drive together to Subic, Laguna or even Baguio or the Banawe Rice Terraces on a nice and big van, mini bus, an RV or much better on a Hensley Arrow trailer hitch to carry everyone around and bring all our stuff together. We are expecting to bring along about twelve to fifteen people who are leaders and volunteers in our youth ministry, Sunday School ministry and cell group ministry. I am sure that with the Hensley Arrow Advanced Towing System, it guarantees the elimination of what many call trailer sway. Today was the last day of our pre-enrollment seminars at Gen. Pio del Pilar National High School. What was supposed to be four days of seminar turned into seven days of seminars for both students and their parents totaling to about 400 parent/guardians and around 500 students. Talks about conducting the same seminar for student athletes are still on going but the Breaking Point program for this month is still expected.

Preparing for Father's Day

During our pre-enrollment seminars at Gen. Pio del Pilar National High School for parents and students who enrolled late or had problems academic or behavioral problems the previous school year, we showed a video of Dick and Rick Hoyt, a father-son team who compete together just almost continuously in marathon and triathlon races. The video was inspirational most especially because Rick Hoyt is a mute quadriplegic – Rick isn’t able to walk or talk and his father, Dick, either pushes or pulls him each time they are in a race and are crossing the finish line.

As I used the video to challenge the students attending the seminar I can’t help but be reminded about the upcoming Father’s Day on June 15. I think every father, especially those who show that kind of sacrifice and love for their children deserves Father’s Day gift baskets or any gift for that matter.

Pre-enrollment Seminar Update

The four scheduled pre-enrollment seminars at Gen. Pio del Pilar National High School, due to the demand, was extended and two additional schedules were added (through the partnership of Breaking Point Foundation and JIVE Youth). Actually, last Tuesday, we already conducted the additional schedule and we had more than 80 parents and students. Our speakers for the student's seminars had to divide the class into two. But for the parent's morning seminar and the afternoon session for the students, we had to stick to one session because we only had one speaker available for each schedule. In addition to that, instead of having May 30, that is tomorrow, as the last day for the pre-enrollment seminar, we will be conducting another one on June 3 as the high school is expecting more enrollees until next week. Pictures of the seminars we conducted last Monday and Tuesday are below.

Pre-enrollment Seminar, Third of Four

Tomorrow, we will be going back to Gen. Pio del Pilar National High School, in partnership with Breaking Point Foundation, for the third of four seminars we are conducting for certain students and parents of the high school. We are conducting three sessions in each seminar for students dealing with the three topics of attitude, obedience and integrity/ character. For the parents we are conducting two sessions that we hope will help and assist them in motivating and empowering their high school kid study better and behave better this coming school year.

One of the topics we discuss with parents is “Avoiding Financial Tension”. One of the points that really get the attention of the parents attending our seminar is the point about saving for the future. There eyes light up when we show computations of how much money they can generate by saving a few pesos a day.

5th Anniversary

This Sunday our church will be celebrating its 5th anniversary. It's first service was May 25, 2003, and this year's anniversary will be celebrated on the exact same date.

The youth ministry, which we now call JIVE Youth Ministry, was begun eight months after (January 2004) through its partnership with Breaking Point Foundation which allowed us to do outreach events at Fort Bonifacio High School where most of our youth leaders at present came from.

This Sunday, as we celebrate the 5th anniversary, there will only be one service (unified service) at 10:30PM. We are inviting all our youth attendees to come to the morning service and invite your family and friends to attend with you. See you all on Sunday! God is indeed faithful!

Today was our first day of the four pre-enrollment seminars at Gen. Pio Del Pilar High School. We conducted simultaneous seminars for students and their respective parent/guardian. Second Session for the Drum Lessons

Today will be the second of three sessions for the free basic drum lessons offered at JIVE Youth. The next session will be about how to read drum notations for the purpose of communicating and understanding the grooves that will be taught throughout the 3 week lessons.
